6. Police: 20 children among 26 victims of Connecticut school shooting

Newtown, Connecticut (CNN) – In one with the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history, a gunman opened fire Friday in a Connecticut elementary college, killing 26 people today, 20 of them youngsters, police said.

The suspected gunman, who was not identified by police, also was killed, apparently by his own hand.

One person was wounded.

The mass shootings occurred in one section of Sandy Hook Elementary School and spanned two classrooms, said Lt. Paul Vance in the Connecticut State Police.

Eighteen kids and nine teachers were killed, with a number of others being treated for their injuries in nearby hospitals.

WASHINGTON – A tearful President Barack Obama said Friday he grieved first as a father about the massacre at a Connecticut elementary college, declaring, “Our hearts are broken right now.” He called for “meaningful action” to prevent such shootings but did not say what it should be.

“The majority of those who died were small children – beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and ten years old,” Obama said.

At that point he had to pause for several seconds to keep his composure, and he wiped his eyes.

The scene from the White House briefing room was one of your most emotional moments of Obama’s presidency. Near him, two senior aides cried and held hands as they listened on the president.
